Testing Your Fitness Levels

Updated: Apr 24, 2020

There are many different reasons and ways to test your fitness levels. The reasons behind testing your fitness level can be personal, for medical reasons or for a sport. You can test your fitness levels for your own personal interest such as if you set a fitness goal and you wanted to see if you reached your goal or to see if you are at a particular fitness level. Some examples of ways to test your own fitness levels could be by doing a 12 minute run around a track, how push-ups/sit-ups you can do in a minute or if you are comfortable in the gym and know the proper form to do an exercise you could do a one rep max test. Sometimes there are medical reasons that a health professional may test your fitness levels such as a physical or if you have any health concerns. Different ways that they could do this could be checking your resting heart rate and seeing how high it is compared to your max heart rate. You could also check this at home, to get your max heart rate you take 220-(your age)=(max heart rate) for example 220-16=204. To get your resting heart you need to find your pulse either on your neck or wrist then count how many beats you fell in 12 seconds, you then take that number and multiply it by 5. As well they might look at your body composition and your breathing rate. Finally some sport teams will test their athletes fitness levels to see what kind of shape they are. The could do this by maybe getting their athletes to run a beep test. Overall there are many different reasons to test your fitness and different ways.
